JFK at 100: Corbyn and Sturgeon should remember Kennedy’s plea for alliances and unity in a world gripped by chaos

Monday 29th May - Today marks what would have been John F. Kennedy’s 100th birthday.  The 35th president of the United States was assassinated in 1963, but his vision of a better future for the world endures.

At Kennedy's swearing in ceremony and inaugural address on January 20th 1961, at the height of the Cold War, he laid out his vision for a more peaceful world and a 'grand and global alliance' to take on what he called “the common enemies of man: tyranny, poverty, disease and war itself.”

Our Vote Smart tool is going viral

Friday 26th May – Voter registration is now closed, the polls are narrowing and the Vote Smart tool, developed by Progressive Alliance, is active online to help people back progressives to beat the Conservatives in key marginal seats.

Vote Smart has been developed by a team of technologists, data analysts and social media strategists, with input from senior staff previously working on the Bernie Sanders campaign.

The tool recommends a tactical vote in constituencies in which the difference between the total number of combined progressive votes and the number of Conservative votes is 10% or less.

The Manchester Tragedy

Thursday 25th May

 

Following Monday's tragic events at the Manchester Arena, Progressive Alliance suspended national campaigning in unison with political parties and third-party campaign groups. Several planned events were postponed.

Lewis invokes post-war spirit to thwart the Tories

Tuesday 16th May - Speaking to a packed-out rally in London, at the Progressive Alliance Launch event last night, Progressive Alliance champion Clive Lewis called on progressive voters to unite in the spirit of the post-war Labour and Liberal partnership to offer the country a bigger, better future.

 

Lewis, the Labour candidate for Norwich South and a former infantry officer who served a tour of duty in Afghanistan, told nearly 1,000 attendees in London:

 

“The Labour Party at its birth and during its strongest influential era has always been a progressive alliance.

More progressive candidates stand aside

Good news!

Over the last few days another progressive candidate stood aside to defeat the Conservatives. Green Party candidate Cheryl Briggs announced she would no longer stand against the Liberal Democrat Layla Moran in Oxford West and Abingdon, who she said offered "the best chance of beating the Conservatives".

She was joined in standing down by Dr Helen Salisbury, the National Health Action Party candidate for the seat.

Labour activist of 46 years expelled for trying to unseat Jeremy Hunt

Steve Williams, a member of the South West Surrey Labour Party, has been expelled by party officials after 46 years of membership.

South West Surrey Progressive Alliance hosted a ‘progressive forum’ on Saturday 6th May to select a single progressive candidate to take on Jeremy Hunt. Members of Labour, the Lib Dems, Greens and National Health Action party came together to select Dr Louise Irvine.

So although the Green Party leadership has now announced it is pulling away from making further agreements with Labour and the Liberal Democrats, the goal of the Progressive Alliance remains the same: To build a movement of people across the country to abandon the old tribalism and collaborate to reset the political system.

This morning Caroline Lucas, co-leader of her party, has called on Jeremy Corbyn and Tim Farron to cooperate and form alliances to stop the Conservatives.

 

Already local progressive alliances have formed in Ealing, Brighton, Shipley, Ilford, South West Surrey, Oxford, Richmond and Twickenham - more will happen this week with a big switch into smart campaigning and voting, The Progressive Alliance is focusing on 97 seats where the combined progressive vote can defeat the conservative candidate.
